It’s no secret that I am pro gay marriage, but that isn’t the reason for my opposition to this day of “appreciation.” People are arguing that Cathy did nothing wrong by voicing his opinions on this touchy subject publicly, and many are even commending him for taking a firm stance on the issue. But freedom of speech is not the issue here, nor the issue that Huckabee is agreeing with by initiating this “appreciation day” – the issue here is civil rights.

Chick-fil-A donates millions of dollars –yes, the ones they earn from your purchases of their chicken sandwiches and waffle fries – to anti-gay organizations every year. One of these organizations has even been officially deemed a hate group by the SPLC, alongside groups like the Ku Klux Klan. The fact that Huckabee would deem a day to celebrate a company that supports these types of organizations is ridiculous. I cannot comprehend why we as a nation would need to celebrate a day that, in its core, is a celebration of intolerance. Supporters of Chick-fil-A’s stance against homosexuality have said things like “Being against gay marriage is not being anti-gay” – in that case, am I supposed to believe that being against interracial marriage is not being racist? In fact, Cathy himself said in January that the company has “no agenda against anyone”…but stating that gay marriage would be “inviting God’s judgment on our nation” and donating millions to anti-gay organizations every year sure sounds like an agenda to me.
